Anime recommendations for everyone in 9 categories
Meant mostly for beginners, but it could come in handy for everyone.
Yes, some of the series here are entry-level crap (SAO, AgK) and some have way better alternatives (Slam Dunk is arguably better than Kuroko no Basket, etc). I try to compromise between accessibility for beginners and quality.
If you're unhappy with your types of anime not being here, check out this GIANT FLOWCHART:
Anime recommendation flowchart for beginners
A set of good gateway shows from a few genres that should make an easy start into anime. If you're into a particular theme/genre, then some of the shows in the extended flowchart might be an even better starting point.
If your answer to the first question was "I'm an otaku", you might be in need of getting a life. Anyway, I think my knowledge of anime will not be sufficient to recommend anything a veteran wouldn't have heard of already.
Genre picker & legend
Guide to the rest of the flowchart. I've included some indicators for gender-targeted shows, and shows that are not really what they seem to be. Personal recommendations are, well, personal - I guess it could help if you are new to a genre and have no idea what you're looking for.
Action/adventure
The most popular genre, hence the biggest cetagory. I've included pretty much 90% of the most popular action shows, with some notable omissions being Yu Yu Hakusho (not sure what would I remove to make room for it) and Akame ga Kill (this one is quite popular but not really worth recommending).
The guilty pleasure section is all my personal recommendation of "That was really fun" (save for JoJo, which I hadn't picked up yet).
Comedy
The other popular genre. Some of the shows here belong to other genres as well - there are a few comedy-drama shows or ones with slice-of-life elements. Overall the principle was "come for the comedy, stay for the drama", as with Angel Beats, Oregairu or GTO. As for romcoms, I've generally tried to avoid the heavily ecchi stuff such as DxD or ToLoveRu, as I didn't see any point in recommending them. If you find them and enjoy them on your own, it's fine.
Slice of life
A combination of SoL shows that are too mild for a "Comedy" tag or some popular tragedy shows that are associated with the "Feels" phrase. I've decided to place these melodramas here, and make room for more stern drama in the next section.
Drama
The serious stuff. Romance drama, fantasy drama, sci-fi drama, psychological drama. Definitely a category for the older audience. Fun fact: I haven't seen a single show in this category, save for Shinsekai yori and Utena. I guess if I picked them up, I'd give a few more "orange seal of approval" recommendations here, so treat this section as a goldmine of 8+/10 shows.
Thriller & Horror
The ambitious branch. Horrors are bundled without much general sorting (didn't have any idea how to split them). Thrillers aren't a category with that many shows, and the layout made room for some important notes.
Madoka is not really equal to NGE, but it is very similar in what it attempts to do, and definitely a great show on its own.
